In establishing a long-term plan, we need to determine whether the lack of food is a chronic problem, or a short-term issue. If the shortage is one of many problems that have converged to render the parent(s) incapacitated, but they are likely to recuperate to the point where it is not an issue again, all we may need to do is help them find a food bank. If food is probably a one time only problem, it is easiest to take them, if we have a car. We don’t need to spend a lot of time on this issue, because once others, like returning to a job are resolved, the food issue will be as well.

Other families run out of food every month. We need to work with them to decide if the problem is lack of financial resources or poor budgeting. If there are not enough resources, or if they are inadequately managed, we use strategies listed under “financial resources” later in this chapter. Some families don’t have food because “friends” and extended family members come in and steal it for themselves, or more commonly, to sell for drug money. Here, we teach them to be more assertive. Families have taught us to prevent stealing by opening all packages immediately, to prevent resale.

Some families need basic education about nutrition and meal planning. Some almost never have nutritious food. We had one family with a friend who was a trucker, hauling Hostess Twinkies. Their entire refrigerator was filled with Twinkies. Some have never heard of four food groups, or have no idea that a steady diet of Kool-Aid is not appropriate for a baby. Here we have to be sensitive to helping parents maintain their self-esteem as they learn. We have to present information in a way that acknowledges lack of information—rather than stupidity, maliciousness, or lack of caring—as the reason they may not have been feeding their children in the best possible way.
